my favorite time of day

There are lots of moments in any given day that are amazing and wonderful and precious.  I love it when one of the kids wakes up before the other on a Saturday or Sunday and I can have some one-on-one snuggle time with them.  It makes me smile when I am in a different room and can hear my kids talking to each other and playing with each other.  Getting to have a conversation with just Cayden while we drive to swimming lessons or back from school is so special and hearing the way Harper chooses words in order to put together a complete sentence amazes me each time.  There is, however, one particular time of day that I have started to look forward to more than any other.  It's that time of night after everyone else in my house has gone to bed and everything is quiet.

It actually started when Harper was about 6 months old.  She would go to bed at 7pm but, like clock-work, would wake up around 11.  She didn't need much more than a few minutes of quiet snuggling before falling back to sleep for another 7 blissful hours but it happened every single night.   I started staying awake and waiting for her 11pm wake-up instead of going to sleep at 10 and getting maybe 45 minutes in before having to get up again.  It was just easier.  The days of Harper waking up during the night have long since passed but I have continued to stay up a little later than everyone else in my house.

Don't get me wrong, I love my family and days when things are quiet and calm are slightly unsettling because I am used to the chaos and commotion of two loud, active young kids and two dogs that move from room to room to try and find the best place to sleep in between trips outside and begging for food under Harper's chair.  But getting to enjoy reading a magazine or watch a tv show from start to finish without getting interrupted 600 times while, at the same time, knowing that everyone is still there is the best.  It's comforting to hear the chorus of snoring coming from down the hall while I relax and decompress.  Seriously my favorite time of day!
